Stroke Victim Regains use of Arm after Stem Cell Injection
25/11/2015
A 66 year old English woman is the first in the country to recover the use of her arm after a stem cell injection ‘reversed’ the damage of a stroke.
Southampton General Hospital carried out the procedure which involved injecting stem cells to the part of the brain believed to help generate new nerve cells.
The 66 year old had lost the use of her arm following a stroke 1 year ago.
The procedure was first carried out on a Scottish woman in 2010 and was carried out on a further 11 patients. Now a further 41 patients across the UK will receive the treatment.
In England alone, 110,000 people suffer a stroke which is the third largest cause of death after heart disease and cancer.
A second patient also at Southampton Hospital is about to receive the same treatment.
