Lupus and Stem Cell Medicine

Clinical trials have demonstrated that a mesenchymal stem cell transplant can greatly improve the condition of lupus patients.

Songtao Chi who discovered stem cells in baby teeth, is Chair and Professor of Anatomy and Cell Biology. It is Songtao Chi and his colleagues who have now worked out a mechanism in which mesenchymal stem cell transplant may help preserve bone in lupus patients.

People with lupus generally suffer from fatigue, joint pain and swelling and have an increased risk of developing osteoporosis.

Dr Chi’s team’s work shows potential for treating not only lupus, but other diseases too.
