The Discovery...
As so often happens in science, a discovery is the result of a chance interaction... In 2003, Dr. Songtao Shi's six-year-old daughter, Julia, asked him to help pull out a loose baby tooth. Dr. Shi, a scientist at NIH's National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), looked closely at the tooth and said, "Wait a minute, there is some red colored tissue inside of the tooth." So he took the tooth to his laboratory and saw that indeed it contained pulp tissue. Dr. Shi, who is also a pediatric dentist, eventually succeeded in isolating living stem cells from the tissue, a discovery that would lead to the collection of more exfoliated teeth from Julia and other children. "Doctors have successfully harvested stem cells from umbilical cord blood for years," said Dr. Shi. "Our finding is similar in some ways, in that the stem cells in the tooth are likely latent remnants of an early developmental process." |
